Why is obedience not a popular topic? What does obedience mean? Why is obedience essential? Look back at Philippians 2:8. Do you want to change your answers?
Obedience is an incredible challenge? How does 2:13 encourage us to be obedient? Give examples from your life.
Read the fourth word of YHWH on Sinai [Exodus 20:12 and 21:17]. Why was rebellion against parents so serious? How about rebellion against leaders [Exodus 22:28]?
When Paul speaks of obedience [Philippians 2:12] he tells us to “do all things without grumbling and disputing” [Philippians 2:14]. How does complaining and being discontent prevent us from being obedient? Think hard. Are there things you are discontent and bitter about that make it difficult to obey God and those he has put as leaders over you?
What were the stars [Philippians 2:15] of Paul’s world? Use Bible Gateway, a similar site, or a bible app to search for the word “star”. There are no mentions of burning balls of gas. What ancient beliefs does the OT accommodate? What does it mean for us, Christians, to shine as stars? How would the Philippians have understood this?
Drink offerings were poured out on the altar as a sacrifice to YHWH [Exodus 29:40–41; 30:9; 37:16; Hosea 9:4 etc.]. They were also used as offerings to other gods [Psalm 16:4]. What do you think Paul is saying in v17? How would you say that in a way that made sense to a person today?
What does sacrificial obedience lead to [Philippians 2:18]?
So what!?
These are the points Nathan gave us…
Obedience is painful, but it brings life.
God doesn’t prefer some people more than others, but there are some who obey him.
When God asks us to do something it is not to destroy us but it is for our good. Because he is a good father who knows the ability, capacity and power he has put in each of every one of his children. He knows that we can do it.
Nothing will change until we do our part.
God has his own part, people also have their part.
Everybody's free to do whatever they want, but for us Christian we must do everything according to the will of God.
Brothers and sisters let us obey and remain obedient to the will of our God Jesus Christ AMEN!
