What stood out or challenged you in the passage?
What is the overarching theme of this letter? See also John 17:20-23.
Paul began, in chapter 5 to look at how being in Jesus and filled with the Spirit transforms relationships in the home. He began with mutual submission [5:21] and wife-husband relationships [2:21-33]. Which relationships does turn to in chapter 6?
What are the responsibilities of parents toward their children? How does Paul qualify the obedience of children to their parents [v1]? Do you think the emphasis on fathers’ responsibilities [v4], rather than mothers’, is how things are supposed to be or just descriptive of life in the Greco-Roman world?
Slaves were to be in fear and trembling of their masters [v5] as women were their husbands [5:33]. Read the short letter to Philemon. Do you think Paul is approving of slavery [v9]?
What is the motivation to be submissive and obedient even in abusive relationships [vv5-8]?
Read the passage again and note anything else that stands out or challenges you. Pray that the Holy Spirit would enable you to change and be more like Jesus and demonstrate the unity we have in him.
