1:14–3:6—Jesus’ early Galilean ministry
Jesus now begins his public ministry in Galilee. This area is in the north of Palestine. It was the site of many biblical events, especially in the life of Jesus, but far away from Judah and Jerusalem.
1:14–20—Initial announcement of the kingdom of God and call of the first disciples
Remember Mark’s audience and the sorts of questions they were asking. What does Jesus mean by “the time is fulfilled”? What was come near [v15]?
What does it mean to repent and believe? Have you repented? How does this relate to the questions of first century Jews [v15]? See 1. Mark 1:1.
Read vv16-20. What do you notice about the calling of Simon and Andrew? How does this link with repentance in v15? Do you think Simon and Peter had been baptised by John and heard Jesus’s preaching before this day? How does their response challenge you?
1:21–45—Miracles at Capernaum
Where does Jesus teach [v21]? Why do you think he adopts this strategy? If you are not sure keep reading. This is always a good principle when reading the bible!
How is Jesus different to the other teachers [v22]?
Read vv22-28. The unclean spirit reveals who Jesus is. Can you think of other examples when God has revealed the truth through evil spirits or wicked men? What does this teach us about God? Jesus commands the unclean spirit to be silent. Why? The news still spreads. What will happen if news get to Jerusalem?
Read vv40-45. This is another incredible miracle that points to who Jesus is. Why does Jesus tell the healed man to “say nothing to anyone” [v44]? Do you notice how Jesus is obeying the details of the law?
